A new life.
A kidney.
A red box.
An ambulance.
A Green Corridor.
A 48-year old becomes immortal.
An extremely moving and overwhelming experience to be present today at the Jain Hospital in Howrah, Kolkata and watch Divinity first hand.
Divinity in the decision of the family members of the 48-year old Ajay Desai to donate his organs in their hour of personal trauma and grief.
Divinity in the hands of Dr Pratim Sengupta in performing the delicate removal of the kidneys, and then the subsequent transplant by him at another hospital. Truly God in human form.
Divinity in the role played by the Kolkata Police in creating a Green Corridor, where all traffic signals were turned green and one of the the kidneys was carried from the Jain Hospital in Howrah to the ILS Hospital in Dum Dum in 38 minutes – a journey which usually takes one and a half hours. Salute to Kolkata Police.
Divinity that two kidneys, two eyes (corneas), and skin were retrieved, thus saving five lives. A new chapter in the history of organ donation in Kolkata.
I feel blessed to have been present at the hospital today to hear the young wife say to me, “Unka dil kisi aur mein dhadkega toh mujhe lagega ki woh amar gaye.” (If his heart beats in someone else, I’ll feel he’s become immortal)
I feel blessed to be present to give a Guard of Honour to the deceased and his family.
May his soul rest in peace.
LIFE COMES FULL CIRCLE
29 December, 2018
A moment of great elation when someone who received a kidney just a fortnight ago, Madho Dutta, is being discharged, fit and healthy, from the ILS Hospital at Dum Dum just now.
So overwhelming to be a tiny piece of this large jigsaw, and to have been present to witness the transfer of the kidney from the Jain Hospital in Howrah via a Green Corridor to the ILS Hospital so recently.
In a moving message, Madho blessed the young deceased donor and his family for giving her a new life. Her son, Shubham, said he would devote his life to spreading the message of Organ Donation.
